It is quite amazing really the tacit, undetermined, influence stars wield in our lives. We may never own up to it, scoff at or turn our noses up with a ‘what rubbish’ stand off, but in actuality apart from religion and cricket, Bollywood is the hottest topic of debate and dissension, gossip and chatting the world over, especially for netizens.

We all have our opinions and our favourites, on films, actors, lately Directors as well. Similarity of choices leads to an unspoken bond, as if the person has placed a finger on the core of your soul and therefore is deserved of being your soulmate.Love me love my actor..

A good film as if reinfuses your day with vigour and vitality, renewed hope and fresh perspective. We claim movie going to be a time pass but simultaneously award it a status of pondering worthiness. It matters to us. The choices of films our favourite stars work in, their performances, their private life, the state of their career. Its almost an alterego-ish level of being.

Like most others I confess subscribing to all of the above. Most of all, its as if I have given my favourite star a special status in my life, a friend whose performance affects me, whose misbehaviour perturbs me and whose successes I revel in as much as I would have a family members. I have allowed a few to almost insidiously become a part of my life. One of them is Shahrukh Khan..after having known him on a personal level….of that another time.

Talented and creative film maker Pavan Kaul was invited by Oz, the owner of the website Passion for cinema and has written an insightful and sensitive post do with his first meeting with Shahrukh Khan, before they worked together professionally. Here he writes of his relationship with SRK in an article which carries an interesting insight into SRK’s personality and little known truths about him , titled The Man Who Saw Tomorrow’ SRK..apt title for the piece and interesting revelations about both the personalities, Pavan and SRK.

Pavan Kaul has his own blog which ennumerates his Filmography, his family history and another article, which is quite a favourite of mine titled ‘Bhram-An Illusion’ .

‘Bhram’ scheduled for March 2008 release incidentally is also the name of his forthcoming film..although the article is a take on his personal journey which amalgamates into his connection with An illusion- ‘Bhram’.

Its fair to know the man behind the image..actor or director. .good read.

  1. SRk is a favourite in the sense that his movies are a ‘must watch’..if that means super success then yes he is the numero uno..
had Umrao jaan featured SRK it would have recovered its cost..abhishek could not draw in the audiences despite his ink up with Ash..that speaks for SRK and his power.
Liked the article by Pavan..it was honest and unassuming.

  2. hmmm.. as they say little knowledge is a dangerous thing :)
the celluloid platter is like a continuous mitosis meosis division… meta stable coz of varied reasonz.. ya, wud be nice to know the ingredients that maketh ‘em all… but again jogging back to reality, most of them, wud hardly be an inspiration… dunno whether all those dark shades come with the package.. only indian middle class real stands tall where i guess the reel real dichotomy is puzzling…

  3. You make a good point there dilip..no matter what a SRK film is a must see atleast once even if it is touted to be not so hot..which speaks volums of his star power. He is endearing in a lot o films though one confesses of not realy liking him in a lot of others..But a good director who is not his fan and overawed by his presence can control his hamming..I liked Pavans article too :)

Hey sapt, gosh your post I had to read and re read and re..well you got the point Im sure. Please try n write for us mortals, even if it means coming down a bit to our level :)

  4. gosh… u broke my heart again.. second time this week… woah! now this is the sound of crying… pat-pat.. fell the tearz :(

just wanted to say that lifez so fast for those so called starz arnd.. they hop skip n jump frames of life with amazing speed… we are but the riders of lesser capable machines n so even if we know them, the sync wud not be there…the reel real wud be mixed n still we lack the maturity sumwhere to think pragmatically…
indian cinema has few role models i wud say.. in the sense of life in general… keeping everything in mind i wud say that its easy to get a toe in… provided sum factors are there… for en mass wat gud wud it do to know the screen behind the mirror stuff?? everytime that has happened, its only been bad breath n complicated stuff… dirty linen et all..

ps: lesser mortalz.. plz don make me go up that virtual coconut tree n then crash down sumday… gimme a ticket to the lesser mortalz gang.. we, the people– hurt wen u projected me up there :))
now aint alwayz gud being modest lady… u being lesser mortal huh?? can i turn the page back to a post n a link of urz :)
    so many feathers up there!!!!!!

  6. Great read! Left me wondering why I love to watch good movies so passionately? As your piece questions ego-motivation to some extent; for us movie-watching freaks….. are we ego-motivated as well, by absorbing through what the director/actors emmulate via tale and story, visual effect, and emotional impacting? Am I filling a void system, by enveloping character through film? Is it a sedative high to the viewer, having the ego-need to extend in this fantasy-way…. satiated?

  7. What I like most about SRK is that he is very witty- some of his spontaneous remarks have to be heard to be believed.

As an actor, many people feel that he is more of a hamster which is only partially true in my view.

  8. Hi north,it could also present a vicarious manner in an experiential zone of emotions, pleasures, highs and lows..a kind of wishful thinking as a captive audience for a couple of hours when the ’self’is but a medium to taste anothers work of art.

    Hi Hiren,
I agree totally..frankly except for the big b as and when he chooses to expose his witty self, SRK by far walks away with the crown for being the most haazir jawaab.

As for your second point. no actor can really perform without guidance and control, briefing and spurring from the director..it is in his face he sees the success of his translation..so in SRKs case when the fdirector has played the part of guide, he has been brilliant.

  9. HI Kaveetaa, your response resonates with me! I do indeed become entranced, and a sense of captivity exists; when I am in the presence of “fine” things…and people.

  10. no way!!!

so much of a cushion for srk? the mama’s darling seat n extra cookie for him?? well… aint into a battle trying to anoint those painted faces around…
the movies n people in them do really live a larger than life off stage, watever maybe the reasons or demands n so why try to figure out the links?
agree they too have the threads of maa pa, sis et all… but then sing in newzeland, eat in paris, dance @ madrid n go for honeymoon to hmmmm… singapore or rome(!!)

which is real for them in their REAL life also.. do we as the audience share the same brands of life?

all the attitudes, persona, fun, frolic, gravity, etc. do come when temperatures n pressures arnd are optimal.

whoever said life is fair… huh..
