Dhoom, the first, had left me unmoved for most part..not being a ‘bike’ enthusiast. Admit it guys, minus the bikes and fanfare associated with it, there was little the film had to offer in terms of performances, script etc..except for Uday Chopras likable dialogues.

Having received mixed reports, was expecting another mindless razzle dazzle, much ado about nothing kinda two and a half hours..Was I in for a surprise!!! And how!!!

There are spoilers from here on.. so …

The opening sequence of the crown heist was brilliant in its action..introduction of Hrithik was one of the best if not ‘the best’ he has ever partaken, even better than Kaho na Pyar hai, as the comeback of Rohit. Abhisheks intro paled in comparison.

If you are to enjoy the film, logicality of script, incidents and continuity should not be a consideration.. or you will be left wondering, among other bloopers, how the Indian police, out on a mission to catch an International thief is limited to just one cop Abhishek and his side kick Uday..WHY?? But like I said, in the name of entertainment, and for the sake of watching a film which offers a jolly good ride, leave the brains at the ticket counter..enter the theatre with a smile and leave with a grin..which, believe me is a lot..coming from me :)

Travel to Brazil and enjoy the sun, sand, sizzle with Bipasha and Ash. Colourful scenes which thankfully do not look forced in their placement, and drama which allows this caper to keep you rivetted, is a plus.

The trap in attempting to make snazzy films of the kind is the lack of film time allotted for development of characters and relationships.. The Russian Roulette scene between hrithik and ash, somehat failed to strike the right note since the passion, maddening love by a hardened criminal like Hrithik for Ash to the extent that he grants her the right to shoot him, does not build up to the crescendo required. One is left wondering, as to ‘when did they fall madly, badly, deeply in love??’

Now, Yashraj productions, has not compromised in any department..which is the MAJOR factor contributing to making the film in the budget it required. Slickness of action, pace of location changes, trendy costumes and song picturisations, demand money, honey and the producers have respected that to the hilt.

But…the film would have been zilch without that one man..THE Hrithik Roshan..Any Hollywood star, would feel the ground under his feet slipping after seeing Hrithik in this mind blowing Avatar. If ever there is an Indian who has complete potential to make it BIG in Hollywood, or for that matter the world over, it is Hrithik. One of the most mature, controlled, dignified, professional, well graphed performance ever seen on Indian screens.. besides Big B’s Black. His dialogues are minimal, his body language Supreme..He looks like a Greek God, performs like a man on a mission..that of conquering the world..Mark my words.. He is Immense..it will be a sheer waste of talent if he does not think International.

Aishwarya Rai disappointed ..she looked the part. But this was not a pin up shoot.. its a film where you have to live, breathe, feel your character..Somehow one gets the feeling its the directors lapse..she was not briefed on execution of the role. It required a cockiness, sexiness in the eyes coupled with an exuberance of youthful charm..but what came across instead was an over confidence in a toned body, as if that was the only preparation required to do the film. If presence of Hrithik failed to elicit emotion from her.. who will? Salman?? Now, I am treading on dangerous territory there, I know. Ms.World has found her Universe in Aby baby..but, when will it show on screen? The chemistry I mean.

Biapasha in the second role as the sister Monali, displayed a flair for comedy, whatever little that was required. Most importantly she was able to match screen presence with ASh the diva, Goddess, looks wise, which is a feat.

Uday Chopra had the best lines in the film..I’d hate to believe that it had to do with being the producers son, but more to do with the profile of the role and the fact that he comes across as lovable, funny, endearing, vulnerable, and a good foil to the seriousness of Abhishek and Hrithik..even had a hottie like Bips on his arm..

Abhishek, is an actor one does expect histrionics from and some day will come into his own with great elan. Presently however, especially since he had the disadvantage of sharing screen space with the Dynamo Hrithik, his performance, posture, body, or rather lack of it, physical fitness, I mean, came out somewhat glaringly.

If the idea was to make a film which signals the brain to ‘carry out involuntary actions only’ for the next two and a half hours, I think the makers did a tremendous job. It does not have repeat value and if for some reason one does decide then only, for you-know-who by now…Duggu..Hrithik

Editing is classy and so is the cinematography. Music was …mmm…nice. Technically a film, India can be proud of..though the action sequences controlled by International technicians..but then.. so what! They did not look sorely out of place.

All in all..Paisa vasool..and a big congrats to the makers.

  4. Hi Dilip,
You’re quite right about the last scene..unimaginative and hurriedly done ..added to the fact that it was badly scripted..but that goes for most of the film. Not a major minus however, considering the genre..like i said..susupension of belief..and all is well’
You’re a sharp one Neha..never has hrithik been presented so lovingly except by his dad..Yeah he has a contract with them..but one cannot begrudge hrithik anything after this performance..he deserves to have a contract with Scorsese, Tarantino. Coppola and Spielberg!! :)
Hey puja,..find the time pet..you wont regret it..Really I am surprised at me self.. just why am I promoting the film so hard? maybe, that a good film painstakingly made, makes me all senti and mental :)
