Ads which have so far ruled the roost with messages of undying love proclaimed via diamonds for some and the modest Prestige cookers ( think ‘jo biwi se kare pyar woh prestige se kaise kare inkaar) are gonne look so ‘pheeka’ /outdated/archaic now that Mukesh- larger-than-life-Ambani has bought his wife Nita Ambani a Rs. 242 crore Airbus 319 corporate jet as a birthday gift.

Will-o-the-wisp- longings in vogue, much in demand aspirations with the moon seemingly within reach..Thanks to the almost unattainable eponym-ish characters gaining real life credibility.

I gulped on reading the news screaming across Mumbai Mirror, amazed, amused, somewhat envious but mostly scandalised. First Antillia his humungous mansion and now this..though I must candidly admit I find the couple hugely endearing. Nita is gorgeous. We attended a social do some time back where they as well as hubby and me were invitees and I found them to be down to earth and highly affable.

Notwithstanding.. A Jet? Whatever for? Is she planning to drop the kids to school in it to avoid traffic bottlenecks? This was my first reaction..rather frivolous I confess.. slowly other doubts clouded the mind.

Do news reports stridently proclaiming him the richest man in the world even if only for a day till the stock markets manipulated their bullish tendencies ( now aint I cynical)have to exemplify so brazenly the acquired status? For one, think what this would do to Tina Ambani and the rest of the Cuffe Parade wives?! Have a heart Mr. Ambani. You have irretrievably set unattainable precedents for the already hypertense, cholestrol afflicted dudes, surviving on Viagra and cosmetic surgery to mask their frenzied anxiety ridden lives. Tsk Tsk..birthdays will never be the same again!

Though what brought a cynical smirk was this little detail:

This sullenly brings back memories of that fateful birthday when hubby in his unique wisdom decided to gift me a much prized English crockery set for my birthday! I was aghast. All romantic notions whisked outa the window forever. The poor guy had no clue as to why I was howling.. blabbering in -between how he doesnt care for me anymore. Men are at such times, much to our disgust, at a complete loss for words which only makes us howl louder. I mean ,while it is true that I had hankered/hungered for it, but not as a b’day gift! It was akin to me presenting him a 96″ Sony Plasma/LCD T.V. for his! Not fair. Personal gifts only, is the undeclared rule..aint it? Sniff.. a rose would have meant so much more! I can be such a sucker.. I hate myself for it.

Coming back to the Ambanis. The ‘gift’ was apparently meant to be delivered in April. Delay brought it down to November so well.. create a stir and some propoganda/ showman ship by coinciding it with Nitas birthday. Hmm.. he isnt the “Top Boss” for nothing.

It does compel one to doubt the purpose of purchase. A jet is fine in this jet age. But making a bally ho of it sounds ‘ Oh- so- middle- class’ as Mrs. Sarabhai would say. It may be a first in India but definitely not the world. So is this whole gimmick out to show a thumb to junior Ambani.. Anil, so that he may lick his chops in disdain?! I think so.

And while we are on this topic.. here is more. It definitely is raining gifts for some of our charmed Mumbaikars. SRK on his birthday, today gifted Farah Khan a mercedes benz s350.

Now thats umm.. a largesse. But wait there is more. This too was cleverly noodled(!) with the news of SRK having loved OSO ( not casting aspersions on that front..farah sure knows her marbles..movie looks interesting)…so much so that he decided to show his appreciation by putting her out of her misery of travelling in an SUV. Farah dear is pregnant with triplets and finds the ride too bumpy.The gallant knight made a really sweet gesture methinks. How many producers are so magnanimous to a Director? I can recall no second name.. can you? But ask me for a dozen names on Producers who have usurped rights of a director, financially and creatively and..pronto they will be presented.

Sigh.. Yet, a merc is no big deal. But a jet!! Where the hell are they gonna park it? Oh Yes.. Antillia the Greek island palace atop Malabar Hill right in ‘apro Mumbai” ! Ah ha.. so the plan was well etched. And we morons go cribbing for the lakhs ( 2-7) one dishes out sometimes to procure parking space for each of our cars in the compounds, not even under stilts. The higher the high rise greater the charge despite it being an illegally accrued fund, against supreme court orders.!!

And when will I stop proclaiming all dewy eyed to hubby and kids.. ” I dont really care for material trappings.. all I want is the love and caring I get from you!”. Naivete never becomes a woman of today!! Learn babes!
Kidding.. Wealth is unimportant as a sum total if not a component of things other than material.

We just dont have it guys.. admit it.. we dont have the vision and style ! Some of us are so desultory as to spend birthdays at orphanages and old age homes to bring a smile on a tear stricken face. Do the headline makers want to write of it? Dont be silly !Why would they bother to showcase a boring , unexciting day spent sans booze and dard-e-disco whatever that means!!
