If any of you have followed the ghastly expose by the Cnn-IBN team on the beggar-mafia-doctor link am sure you are equally apppalled.
Just how low is mankind in a mood to stoop, is what boggles ones sanity! This is not just a pathetic mirroring of the depravity of a ‘noble’ profession, to me, more poignantly is the glaring truth of poverty, its compellings and abject helplessness. To imagine a human being with sound reasoning faculties, opt for amputation of a vital limb of his body as the SOLE means to survival, is tragic.
As Indians, living in India, poverty is a reality we have learnt to accept and for most part grown immune to. However, news of this level of desperation, left me spell bound. Surely, there must be alternative sources of living..or am I being naiive and ill-informed?
Presently of the three doctors who have been accused, two have absconded. Dr. Bansal, who had been detained for questioning, has been, believe-it-or-not, released for lack of a complainant, says the police!!!
First the suicides of our farmers, then the news of citizens consenting to maim themselves for a livelihood is if anything, a sad take on the edge of economic disruption our country is experiencing.
The disparity of vision is so apparent, when on the one hand there is news of Mukesh and anil Ambani embarking on multi billion dollar plans for a new India notwithstanding the dichotomy of poverty of the level depicted by this report.
So. frankly, where do we stand as a country?? On the brink . poised for a substantial leap on the world scene, or is that an eyewash, a mirage, merely a hypocritical refection of reality?
This feature by CNN has moved me beyond words. The doctors who have exploited the misery of poverty and interpreted it as a method to make a quick buck, is shameful and a disgrace. How do these ‘monsters’ get a good nights sleep? When the days activity includes amputing a healthy limb, is the mind numbed, anaesthetised, to accepting the ramifications of that action?
Wonder who the beggars are? Or, how the doctors are not beggars as much as those who have been fated to be so..
