Stress is the modern day equivalent of the plague in days of yore. It has swept all under its devouring shadow. The obvious difference being that while the latter was attributed to causes beyond control of the individual, the former, arose directly out of serious neglect towards factors which precipitate the onset of its often fatal ramifications.
Frankly, I was quite taken aback at the news of ‘chhote Nawab’ Saif Ali Khans mild heart attack. Firstly due to the image of the stars fitness( the snaps been chosen from among scores to prove the point) stories circulating to do with his exercise regimen. Secondly with the sequence of events. Reportedly Saif after having returned from a gruelling month long shooting schedule in South Africa, followed up with strenuous dance rehearsals for the ‘Stardust Awards Show” later that day. He complained of chest pain and was admitted to Lilavati Hospital, where doctors were quick to detect a small blood clot which has since been treated. Saif is well on his way to recovery, to be discharged in a day or so.
If he heeds the warning signs responsibly, (to begin with gets off those killer sticks pronto) then this apparently traumatic turn of events may actually prove to be a blessing in disguise..as a forestaller for what could have been a major complication. Nature, imho, almost always, forewarns us of future catastrophes. It is we who either ignore the ominous warning signs, or arrogantly/immaturedly by pass the signals often with a ‘how-can-it happen-to-me’ or’ a ‘maybe-later’ excuse. Problems multiply as does regret.
Whats astounding is the number of stress related complications involving those in their 20’s and 30’s. Reasons galore..Nuclear families and their demanding nature in contrariness to the nesting, nurturing joint family of the past, where duties were divided, responsibilities shared, therefore stress halved as well. Today, freedom has brought on its responsibilities often too arduously. Added to it this: Now that a boy/girl has been exposed to the goodies of life and their availability only a grasp away, desires have found wings, the body sadly has not matched itself up to the flight of the mind.
If there is a single lesson I have learnt from my days in the Yoga ashram and also in Vippassana meditation camps, it is to remain grounded, to connect myself with the inner me on a daily basis, in peace and quietude, with an attitude of surrender and acceptance, with gratitude as its base. Somehow, I feel that most today, get caught up with their energies and their relations with the world outside their periphery, to such an extent that they lose contact with the source of positive energy..inner sanctum sanctorium. It therefore transforms them into a robot which has actions to do, albeit running on a battery with limited life and disconnected with re-fuelling energy..result is disastrous.
The purpose of highlighting this issue linked to a celebrity, is to emphasise on the fact that those who live a charmed, glamorous life, blessed as if with allegorical heavenly bliss, are not insulated from breakdowns of the kind. It debunks the notion of the jet set being engulfed in a protective bubble. All the more reason to bring in urgency in altering lifestyles which speak of high octane, adrenalin ridden, rushed for time, fatally ambitious, negligent to nutrition, defined by sleeplesness on one hand and lethargy on another, state of existence.
Our parents constantly reminded us of truisms like ‘ Kismat se zyaada aur waqt se pehle kuchch nahin milta’ ( You can never get anything before its allotted time and more than what fate has ordained for you).Remembering this at those crucial junctures where you push the envelope hurling your health onto the brink of disaster, might help in transforming “Karma’ into ‘Nishkama Karma’ ..Action wihout desire for fruit. It calms one and sets about a chain of reactions whereby the journey is all important, not the destination.
In fact is there a destination? I would tend to believe there is none..the transcience of life and inevitability of death, for how long will we play hide and seek with its veracity?
